Q&A with Jorge
I tried to grow my own cannabis on several occasions, all of which have ended in terrible disaster. I had spider mites living in wet soil killing my poor plants. I found a cheap 6 plant 400w HP sodium lamp on the internet. Is it worth the money and should I get the HP sodium to metal halide conversion bulb? Please help I have never harvested and would be overjoyed to do so soon
Air ventilation and circulation are essential in a grow room. Remember that you have to assume the role of Mother Nature indoors. You are responsible for the climate!
You can grow great cannabis in Alabama as long as you give it the proper conditions – light, air (CO2, heat and humidity), fertilizer and soil. Buy a 400w metal halide or HP sodium lamp that is electrically sound and with a guarantee from a reputable company. Definitely call the company on the telephone and ask about the guarantee and return policy. Look for a lamp with remote ballast in an enclosed box. Make sure the power cord is grounded. The reflective hood will make the difference in plants receiving 20-30 percent more light. Some of the best reflective hoods on the market include the Adjust-A-Wing and the Daystar from Hydrofarm, the Sun System from Sunlight Supply and the Midi and Wide hoods from Hortilux. All of these hoods will increase garden output substantially.
Buy a quality hydroponic or organic fertilizer and follow directions. Do not switch fertilizers and call the manufacturer if you have any fertilizer-related problems. Buy high quality soil or soilless mix. Using soilless mix such as ProMix will make growing easier. It holds moisture evenly and gives soil pests no advantages.
Spider mites live and breed on plant foliage. They do not live in the soil. Sounds like you had fungus gnats. The jumpy little creatures live in the top layer of moist soggy soil and can be controlled by letting the soil dry out and covering the soil, which kills the algae they live on.
This grow room is well ventilated and has good air circulation too. The heat from the lights is pulled outdoors with the help of a vent fan.
